Glue - Andrew Sutherland and Helen Eel Robinson

‘Glue’ is a collaborative mixed media show by Glasgow based contemporary artists Andrew Sutherland and Helen Eel Robinson who met studying at the Glasgow School of Art in 2014, graduating in textiles and painting in 2018.

Bringing together the mediums of film, illustration, painting, knit, tufting, papier-mâché and sound they have conceived an immersive glimpse into a bizarre world based around the many-faced creature, ‘Glue’.

Sutherland and Robinson have created characters, costumes, a story, and the universe they inhabit.

Using texture, scale and context to make everyday items surreal and symbolic, ‘Glue’ plays with childish ideas of fun and mystery. Mixing these with themes of jealousy and revenge creates unnerving undertones.

Andrew Sutherland is a textile artist whose work seeks to pursue unusual and playful ideas. Works are predominantly a mixture of machine knitting, crochet and tufting with a focus on constructed three dimensional textiles and material exploration. Taking inspiration from cartoons and furry animals - and then mixing these with the demonic and alien creates a feeling of camp and childish horror.

Helen Eel is a practicing Glasgow based artist, mainly working in gouache and ink illustration and painting. Her work is based around themes of emotion, unease and strange scenes of dreams and everyday life populated by characters and symbols of her own imagining. She graduated from GSA in 2018 and worked as a contemporary portrait painter, exhibiting in the National Portrait Gallery London and elsewhere. She has been part of a number of group and solo shows since 2014.
